Why IEC Registration Matters
Without a valid IEC, customs authorities will not clear your shipments, and banks cannot process most cross-border trade payments in your business's name. It's also required to claim export incentive schemes and to register on the ICEGATE and DGFT portals. Since April 2021, IEC holders must also confirm their IEC details online every year between April and June — even if nothing has changed — or the IEC gets deactivated.

Is IEC a one-time registration?
Yes. Once issued, your IEC is valid for the lifetime of your business — no renewal required, though DGFT requires an annual online confirmation of your IEC details (even if unchanged).
What happens if I don't update my IEC annually?
DGFT deactivates IEC codes that aren't confirmed online during the April–June window each year. A deactivated IEC can usually be reactivated once you complete the confirmation, but it can delay shipments in the meantime.
How long does it take?
Typically 1–2 working days after your documents are verified, subject to DGFT portal processing times.
Do I need a GST number to get an IEC?
